According to Colorado Health, the Colorado government says people are better off drinking tea, milk or coffee than water because the water is either so polluted, or too scarce. The problem exists in every state that the Colorado River runs through, and the world will start losing ocean water as soon as 2045.
It’s a big jump for some people, especially if they don’t have access to any of these beverages. The Colorado government is so worried that they are making it a law.
“The Colorado River is drying up,” said Colorado Health in an official statement. “And there isn’t another big source of freshwater. Milk, tea, coffee, and juice all keep you hydrated, and there are choices. We don’t want people to feel excluded.”
South Central Colorado will be more affected by this water crisis because the Colorado River runs right through this region. However, local scientists say that the Colorado River will be completely dried up by 2050, and milk will be our only choice. Other places will be affected by this crisis too, including Utah, Arizona, California and even some of northern Mexico.
These people are really worried that they might have to move because of this water shortage, so they are panicking and collecting as much water from the Colorado River as they can. This is causing even more panic in each state downstream, because so much water is being taken by states upstream.
Alex Galla, a farmer in Arizona, shared his thoughts on milk becoming the new water.
“Lots of people think that this may not be very bad, but when I look at it as a farmer, I think, What will my livestock drink? I have read that milk is good for crops, so that’s fine. The only problem is that my livestock can’t drink milk, but only coffee and water. Coffee is expensive though.”
Galla has recently started promoting the use of water for livestock so he doesn’t have to buy coffee for his cows.
Officials claim that if water continues to be polluted in these areas, polluted rain will fall, and if this continues, more people won’t have fresh water to drink, and will have to drink milk, juice, tea or coffee instead.
There are options to purify and filter water, but to be mass produced, this would cost trillions of dollars, and many years to build the technology and facility to do this. Many engineering companies are already working on this solution, but say it will take around 10 years to be finished and working. This would be long after the lack of clean, fresh water becomes a big problem. We hope that more news about this problem will appear within the next few years because the more help we can find, the less of a problem this will be.
